Program Highlights
Our program today was a report from Martin Jones on our RAWEF - Rotary African Women’s Education Fund – 100 Students and Counting!
The RAWEF Story . . .
- RAWEF is…Rotary African Women’s Education Fund
- The Fund is administered through the Kitchener Rotary Club Charitable Foundation
- The Fund is used to provide bursaries for selected women in East Africa to attend university in Uganda, Kenya, and Tanzania
- The students we support are generally financially challenged and without these bursaries, would not attend university
RAWEF Impact . . .
- 2022 is our Club’s 100th Anniversary…and this year, we approved our 100th RAWEF student…wow!
- RAWEF has now funded university education for over 100 (actually109 this year!) students in East Africa
- Since the fund’s inception in 2010, we have provided student bursaries of over $500,000!
- We generally fund 12 new students annually, and have an annual budget of about $75,000
- RAWEF exists thanks to Kitchener Rotary Members Audrey Wipper (deceased 2018) for her substantial financial donation, and Dave Martindale for implementing her vision
Today’s Program . . .
- We are delighted to have two of our RAWEF students join us today via Zoom, along with Sister Joan Mukhwana, program leader for the SSND in Kenya
- First, RAWEF student Evaline Adhiambo Oluoch will give us a presentation about her experience at university and the personal impact of the RAWEF bursary
- Second, Tasreen Charania will have a conversation with RAWEF student Faith Auma Otieno about her experiences related to the RAWEF bursary
