Shawky Fahel was happy to be at the meeting today with his wife Kathie, and that both of his sons will be celebrating their birthdays, tomorrow, November 11. Shawky is also happy about the work being dome by our Peace committee. We are working with a Rotary Club in Nazareth to provide computers to children with physical disabilities. These computers will come with a head set that will enable to the computers to be controlled by the eyes. The committee is also working on a Peace Poll to be erected at Conestoga College.
Linda Bennett was very happy to have recently celebrated her mother’s 90th Birthday and let us know that she just had her drivers licence renewed!
Club Announcements
Neil Swayze, chair of our A Better Tent City Committee, let members know that we will be having three “drives” in support of A Better Tent City again this year. The first, will be a collection of winter wear – coats, scarves, gloves, socks, etc. Items can be brought to any of our up coming meetings until December 8.
Online Auction Chair, Vince Cerullo, reminded members that the auction is still running until this coming Saturday, November 15 and that there are still many great deals to be had. Members are encouraged to continue to get the word out to family and friends. Members were also reminded to be sure to collect any signs that have been placed out in the community on Saturday morning at the close of the auction. These will be collected at our Item Pick Up times on Friday November 21 and Saturday, November 21.
Members are reminded that our annual Holiday Social will be on December 8 at the Double Tree by Hilton on Fairway Road in Kitchener. There will be some special celebrations and our annual Pie Auction, so, if you have not already done so, be sure to mark your calendar and stay tuned for more details
Program Highlights
Our program today was an observance in recognition of Remembrance Day.
Three club members told personal stories of remembrance,
Robert Shipley spoke of a navel battle during WWII and that as a sailor himself he later served on the same named ship that was involved in rescuing men from one of the damaged ships in the original battle.
Shawkey Fahel spoke of attending the 60th Anniversary of the D-Day celebrations at Juno Beach in 2004, along with his father-in-law and one of his sons. His father-in-law landed at Juno Beach on D-Day and they were able to see the actual spot where he landed.
