John Webster hosted a discussion on 'Why one becomes involved in Rotary? He acted as the interviewer for several members [Paul Rostrup, Susana Jimenez & Brent Dekoning] who spoke to the members about how they became involved in various community organizations and their 'hands-on' experiences.

Paul spoke on the Juvenile Diabetes Ride for diabetes research and how he encourage his staff from Scotia Bank to become involved in raising money. They had to ride a stationary bike for 5 to 10 minute. Pledges were matched by corporate sponsors.

Susana spoke of her involvement in community service from the time she was young since her family was very involved in such activities. Her hands-on experience was with her church which puts on a community dinner for the less fortunate individuals & families. They are able to serve 150 people in need. Those who generally have no one with whom to to spend the holiday season.

Brent spoke of the Forest Hill P.S. Lunch program through Nutrition for Learning that several members [12-14] of our club help out every Thursday by packing up plastic containers with nutritious snacks for each classroom. Our club became involved when the school requested a donation for their new playground equipment and when asked if we could do anything else this came up. The Principal & teachers are delighted as they have seen a change in student behaviour due to the lunch program.

Karen spoke to the strength of Rotary being the people who, like the interviewees, liked to work for a better community through hands-on activities. The Nutrition for Learning program has been around for a good many years because it helps kids and schools. She also outlined a story about a mystery donor to one of the Habitat for Humanity families who lost a child and were unable to pay for the funeral expenses. This person agreed to pay the expenses which shows how acts of kindness help out those in need.
