Meeting called to order by President, Karen Redman, at 12:00, at University of Waterloo, Engineering 5, Waterloo. Karen expressed appreciation to the University of Waterloo for arranging the venue and noted that the weekly meeting format would be abbreviated to allow time for the off-site visit.
Today's guests included exchange student Clara Magno,Tom Sullivan, guest of Richard Bruckeder, Simon Sham, guest of Shawky Fahel, Akmal Syed, Josephene Punadath, guest of Erica Lee Garcia and guest Speaker, Pearl Sullivan.
Car Draw – Wayne asked that we please bring tickets to the next meeting on Oct 5th to make sure all tickets are in time for the early bird draw on the 19th.

Our guest speaker was Dr. Pearl Sullivan, Dean of Engineering, University of Waterloo.
Originally from Malaysia, Dr. Sullivan came to Canada 30 years ago to attend university in Nova Scotia. She went from there to obtain her PhD from UBC. Dr. Sullivan joined UW in 2004 and was appointed Dean of Engineering in 2012. She was very pleased to speak to Rotary as when she was 17 Rotary played a key role in providing her with a placement in an exchange program that took her to Australia. This experience encouraged her to continue to explore the world bringing her to Canada.
Another Rotary connection relates to the University of Waterloo. In 1956, Ira Needles spoke at the Kitchener Rotary Club and made a case for establishing a new university in Waterloo that would be based on co-operative education. The goal was to educate 150,000 engineers. The rest is history. The first co-op class of 57 students graduated in 1962 and 60 years later the program is still going strong. A total of 39,343 engineers have graduated from UW. All engineering students participate in a co-op program and 97% are employed at the end of the program. UW is Canada’s largest engineering school and is seeing continued demand for the program. The academic level of students is very high with 1/3 having average entrance grades over 95% and 46% over 90%. There is also a growing number of women enrolling in the Faculty which has been one of Dr. Sullivan’s objectives as Dean.
The Draw date is November 27th at the Ranger's Game.
Our goal this year is to raise $80,000 through direct individual sales with a total goal of $110,000 including mail outs and corporate sales.
Our main selling venue will be Thursdays and Saturdays at the St. Jacobs Market again this year in the same location as previous. We also have access to Swanson's Home Hardware and members are encouraged to find alternate selling locations as well.
Sign up sheets will be available at weekly Rotary meetings.
Tickets can be picked up at the registration desk at each weekly meeting. NB! This year the ticket books are identified with a number on the cover and the covers MUST be returned when the ticket stubs are handed in. This allows us to keep track of the tickets sold as per the license conditions.
Selling teams will again be used this year and members are asked to keep their team captain up to date with ticket sales. Weekly sales updates will be provided at each meeting.
Use social media and other opportunities to promote the draw. A sample letter will be made available to send to contacts.
