John named out Treasurer, Ray Taylor as our bell-ringer. In order to compile various reports and plans, John required an explanation of various figures and processes, which Ray was able to provide on a timely basis.
Ed Fowler had the pleasure of attending the first Youth Exchange participant meeting in Brampton last weekend. While there are only 14 in-bound students this year, he was very impressed with the group - especially Elle. By Sunday morning they were a very cohesive group.
Karen Redman was pleased to announce that as of a week ago she now has a granddaughter. The Inspiring Women event is taking shape, and Elle and a Rotaractor will be participating. Having a Rotaractor participate takes one more item off John Webster’s bucket list.
John Frezell announced that as they are now empty nesters (both children attending university), he and his wife are taking the opportunity to visit Ireland.
Rohit Kumar announced that since joining Rotary, he has spent a lot of time in London (ON) working on a very significant case. The case has concluded earlier than anticipated (and very successfully), and he will be able to increase both his family and Rotary involvement.
Susana Jimenez was pleasedto let us know that her son is now in KW and has launched a renovation business.
John Webster noted that it is expected that the Kitchener Club (as the home of the District Governor) host one of the hospitality suites. He still requires one of more members to help stock/host the room.
Gary Parker provided an “ask” letter and gift form for the on-line auction. He noted that it was important that the form be completed in detail (especially the product description) and provided to him.
He noted that he had received confirmation from the Fairmont Royal York in Toronto, confirming that they were willing to donate a suite for a night, but there were no details attached. Apparently Susana Jimenez made the ask, and because they responded directly to the Club, she was not even aware of the response. Thank you Susana, and you are forgiven.
Lew Ford, in follow up to his earlier instructions for erecting the shelter used for Car Draw, noted that he had purchased very sturdy pegs for fastening the shelter to the ground and provided instructions (if you are erecting in, you may want to start inserting the pegs and use the hammer in the card as a bare to insert in the top of the peg in order to twist the pegs in).
He also noted that Thursday spots are sometimes still free. While not as busy as Saturday, you should still be able to sell $300 or more.
Just a reminder that there are effectively two types of make–ups. The first is a meeting attendancemake-up if you manage to miss a regular meeting. This can keep your attendance perfect. This can take the form of a meeting at another club, or a Club or District Committee meeting. These makeups are recorded on the Clubrunner site only. Clubrunner requires that they be posted within two weeks of the makeup date.
The second form of makeup can also consist of the above meetings – but involves you paying for a meal while at that meeting. In this latter case, if you have missed a regular Club meeting in the quarter, you will receive credit for the $18.50 that you paid the Club for that meeting (if you are not attendance exempt).
A further reminder is that you should let Sandra know of the make up as soon as possible as she cannot do this months after the fact. In order to get remuneration for meals for which you’ve paid, you have to let Sandra know in the same quarter. The quarterly cut offs are: Sept. 30th, Dec. 31st, March 31st, and June 30th. Once the billing period is closed, you cannot be reimbursed for a meal in a previous quarter.
NAPHANSORN (ELLE) YODSANGA took the opportunity to introduce herself and her country – Thailand.
Elle, who is only 16, is from Khon Kaen in north east Thailand.
The capital of Thailand is Bangkok (Krung Thep). The actual name is about three lines in length.
The country has a population of about 69 million, and is known for its food (often spicy) and its temples (as Hubert, Martin, Tom and I can attest).
Elle if from family of four. Her father is a photographer and her mother owns a wedding gown studio. Her older brother is attending university in Bangkok, and working on a medical degree.
She noted that her family’s goal is to have one annual vacation with the whole family – and therefore she has travelled a lot.
What keeps Elle busy – Elle has attended a small bilingual school (300 – 400 students). With the small size, the students are very close and have a good interaction with the teachers. Her hobbies include photography, watching movies, trying new foods, and participating in a volunteer club.
Here sponsoring Rotary Club spends considerable effort of a feeding and a clean water program. It raised considerable funds from a running marathon.
She came upon the possibility of becoming an exchange student when she attended RYLA.
Elle’s bucket list is long, and includes learning to speak English better (we think she does a good job already, playing in the snow, ice skating, taking 1,000 photos this year (she is already planning to increase this goal) participating in road trips, learning to bake cookies as good as Martha’s, and attending concerts. Unlike an earlier student it does not include riding a polar bear.
Remember to consider including Elle in your plans – she looks forward to meeting you and learning more about Canada and our culture.
